100 Years of Danny Boy

21 June
The words to “Danny Boy” were penned by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly in 1910. After his sister-in-law in the United States sent him a copy of “Londonderry Air”, in 1913, Weatherly modified the lyrics of “Danny Boy” to fit the rhyme and meter of Londonderry Air.

100 years later, Danny Boy is one of the world’s most loved songs with hundreds of recorded versions by acts as diverse as Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, The Pogues, Johnny Cash to The Muppets.

As the sun sets at Music City!, the children, adults and choirs of Derry will come together for a massive outdoor performance of Danny Boy to celebrate the 100th anniversary of ‘the world’s favourite song’.
