All Ireland Fleadh will be coming to Derry in 2013

30 January

There will be music and celebration in the Derry air as the city’s historic bid to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2013 finally won over organisers Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

A top level civic delegation, which included local political representatives Martina Anderson and Mark Durkan, travelled to Comhaltas headquarters at the weekend to give a final pitch to the organisation's Ard Chomhairle. The competition has never been held north of the border in its 60 year history.  The event will coincide with the city's tenure as the the UK's first ever City of Culture.

Director General of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Labhrás Ó Múrchu made the announcement and congratulated the city on a fantastic and historic bid.

Comhaltas Dhoire, the local branch leading the Fleadh bid, said they believed 2013 would be a “fantastic Fleadh”.

The Fleadh is the world’s biggest celebration of traditional Irish culture that attracts over a quarter of a million visitors and is expected to generate up to £30million for the local economy.

A special Facebook page has been set up to allow the public to keep up the date with the campaigns development, visit www.facebook.com/bringthefleadhtoderry.
