The Avish is a unique 18th-century cottage set on a wooded hilltop overlooking Lough Foyle and
Inishowen. Peaceful and secluded, yet a mere 10 minutes from the vibrant city of Derry, it is a perfect base from which to tour Donegal, the Causeway Coast and the North West.
Beautifully furnished and decorated, with wood-burning stoves, private garden and
courtyard, the cottage sleeps four to six (2 bedrooms, farmhouse kitchen with original fireplace, large sitting room with gallery, bathroom with disabled-access shower). There is a very comfortable double sofa bed in the gallery above the sitting-room and a child’s cot and high chair can be provided on request.
This is a cottage for all seasons. Cosy in the autumn and winter, with logs provided for the wood-burning stoves, it is set in its own extensive grounds that provide a backdrop of daffodils, primroses and bluebells in the springtime. In the summer, visitors can sit out on the terrace and admire panoramic views of the Sperrins, the Foyle Estuary and the Donegal Hills, or have a barbecue in the patio garden planted with herbs, climbing roses and clematis.
The Avish was restored with great care by its owners, who kept many features of the original cottage, which is over 250 years old. Antique oak and pine furniture, original flagstones, quarry tiles and cast-iron bath, pure cotton bed linen and towels, local pottery and paintings give the cottage a charm that is unmistakably Irish. But there is also everything the modern traveller might require here, from a walk-in shower to wide-screen TV to Wi-Fi.
Special attention has been paid to making the Avish both a family-friendly and an eco-friendly home. Children love playing or reading in the gallery overlooking the sitting room. Books, games and films are provided, and the garden and courtyard are private, safe and traffic-free. Those concerned with our children's future will also be reassured that a lot of care has been taken to reduce energy and waste disposal needs at the Avish. Renewable energies (wood and sun) are used for heating, natural sunlighting has been maximized, and recycling and composting facilities are provided.
All visitors are given a welcome pack on arrival. Home-made “Avish Cottage” jam, local potatoes, tea, soda-bread, scones or biscuits and a can or two of Guinness - enough to be getting on with and give a foretaste of what's to come. An information pack gives advice on where to shop and where to eat (there are many very good restaurants in the area), as well as suggestions for some "Grand Days Out" On request, an organic veggie box is also provided.
Since opening in 2008, the Avish has been given a 5-star rating by the Northern Irish Tourist Board: a testimony to the quality of the accommodation it provides and the genuinely warm welcome reserved for visitors.
