Castlewellan

Castlewellan is a market town situated in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Designed around the 18th century, the town is widely acclaimed for its wide tree lined streets and elegant squares.  Castlewellan Forest Park covers some 450 hectares. The largest stretch of water in the Park is Castlewellan Lake, it is nearly one mile in length and covers about 40 hectares. The land leased from the Annesley family in 1967 became a forest park in 1969. When in Castlewellan you must visit the Annesley Gardens and National Arboretum with its magnificent collection of trees and shrubs, and the Peace Maze, the largest and longest permanent hedge maze in the world. Each year in July, Castlewellan Agricultural Show is held within the beautiful grounds of Castlewellan Forest Park.
