Damian and Susan McCloskey founded the Causeway Cheese Company in 2000 as a diversification from mainstream farming. We make our cheese by hand using traditional methods whilst adhering to today's strict hygiene regulations.
All of our cheeses are handmade to our own individual recipes, ranging from a distinctive mature cheese to cheeses with a touch of Northern Ireland individuality, e.g. cheese with Dulse, harvested from the shores of Northern Ireland.
In all, Causeway Cheese currently manufactures a range of cheeses. All of the cheeses are named after ancient townlands or place names in and around the village of Loughgiel. Examples of our cheeses are listed below.
• Drumkeel - The first cheese produced by the Causeway Cheese Company,. Drumkeel is only produced during the summer months.
This cheese is mild with a creamy flavour and crumbly texture.
• Castlequarter – A Giant of a cheese. This is a distinctive cheddar type cheese with an individuality all of its own. Matured a minimum of 3 months for mild, 6 months for medium mature strength, 12 months for mature and 18 months for vintage.
• Ballyveely - A hard cheese made with goat’s milk. This cheese challenges the usual perception of goat’s cheese with a clean, fresh flavour.
