About

An interesting walk on the southwestern edge of the Derg valley through scenic, seldom visited countryside. The highlight of this walk is the Causeway, an abandoned 1.5 mile stretch of the original Killeter to Pettigo Road.

Start Point:
H205801

Finish Point:
H205801

Route:
The walk starts from the car park to the rear of Killeter Heritage Centre. From the centre turn right onto the main street and follow the brown sign pointing to St Caireall`s Church and St Patrick`s Well. A short distance after this sign turn left on to the Aghalougher Road. Approximately 400 yards on leave the Aghalougher Road and turn left uphill on the Meenamullan Road. Continue southwest on this road that becomes a track and pass through a gate leading to the Causeway. (The Causeway can be quite wet underfoot, so sturdy footwear is required). Follow the line of the Causeway straight ahead, several stiles and a short footbridge give access to this unique feature. The Causeway is an ancient road which is now in the process of being inundated by the surrounding blanket bog. Local folklore recounts the Causeway`s history as a border smuggling route, that was particularly busy during the strict rationing of World War II. The path then leads you through a wooded area followed by crossing a large metal gate onto the hill road. Follow this road to what is known as the 'Black Gap'. On reaching a layby just off this unmetalled road stop for a time and enjoy the panoramic views of Fermanagh and South Donegal. After appreciating the view turn and retrace your outward jouney back over the Causeway to Killeter.
