City of Derry Drama Festival

03 March - 11 March
The City of Derry Drama Festival is an amateur drama festival staged annually each spring since 1980. It is affiliated to the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland and the Association of Ulster Drama Festivals. It was founded to celebrate the best of amateur drama, to foster and encourage excellence in amateur production and to make a varied range of dramatic productions accessible to as wide an audience as possible. The festival attracts top, award winning groups from all over Ireland.

The Festival grew out the community passion for amateur drama that was widespread in the city in the late seventies. With representatives from all of the existing drama groups at that time, the late Michael Gillen formed an organising committee and the first City of Derry Drama Festival was staged in the Great Hall of Magee College from 22nd -29th March 1981 with Ray McAnally as the adjudicator.
