Clandeboye Estate is the home of Lady Dufferin (Lindy Guinness) and is a 2000 acre estate in Bangor, Co Down. The estate is considered to be one of Ireland’s most important and beautiful natural landscapes. Part of the state is used to graze a small herd of award winning pedigree Jersey and Holstein cows. The Holstein herd was voted the best Holstein Herd in the UK in 2007 and the Estate’s champion cow “Clandeboye Willow” is the supreme champion cow of all Ireland.
In 2007 it was identified by Lady Dufferin that there was an opportunity in the market for Northern Ireland produced yoghurt and it was believed that the wonderful milk produced by the Clandeboye herds would create an excellent product. And so Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt was born, the only yoghurt currently made in Northern Ireland.
Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt Co. makes a beautiful range of handcrafted artisan yoghurts from a carefully selected blend of their own Jersey and Holstein milk. The yoghurts are produced daily from the freshly milked cows on Clandeboye estate and it is the inclusion of the rich and creamy jersey milk that gives Clandeboye estate yogurts their very distinctive taste and texture. All of the yoghurt is produced in a small artisan dairy with no milk powder, cream or other thickening agents added, thus ensuring a 100% natural taste. They are produced in very small batches, incubated slowly over night and hand stirred to give a smooth creamy product which Darina Allen has described as the best yoghurt she has ever eaten.
A range of yoghurts are produced including natural and Greek yoghurt which is strained through cheesecloth in the traditional Greek style and with no additives. As well as hand stirred flavoured yoghurts namely;
• Raspberry
• Strawberry
• Toffee and caramel
The Greek Yoghurt is recognised for its high quality and won a Gold Great Taste Award in 2008 as well as the Northern Ireland Food and Drink Association Best New Product in 2008.
The packaging for the Clandeboye Estate yoghurts has been carefully designed to link the yogurt back to the place and cows from which it comes, to help develop a clear sense of provenance for the product. The foil lids feature paintings of the Clandeboye estate cows and rooms in Clandeboye House, all of which have been painted by Lady Dufferin herself a professional artist.
