Enniskillen to host major world angling event in 2013
County Fermanagh will host a major world angling event next year, the 2013 World Championships for Predator Boat Fishing with Lures.
The event will take place on Upper and Lower Lough Erne, around the town of Enniskillen.
The town of Enniskillen previously hosted the World Angling Championships (match fishing) in 1992 on the river Erne at Roscor, Belleek, when over 30 countries took part, many of whom returned to other angling events in subsequent years.
Department of Culture Arts and Leisure MinisterCarál Ní Chuilín, commented “A lot of hard work from a range of individuals and organisations has gone in to securing this prestigious angling competition for Enniskillen.
“This is the first time this event has taken place in Ireland. In welcoming world-class anglers to Co Fermanagh, we will be putting one of the planet’s best fishing destinations on a global stage.
“The competition will take place on part of the Public Angling Estate at Lough Erne. DCAL staff have been liaising with organisers and they will continue to work in the build up to the competition and at the event itself.
“I wish to congratulate all those involved in bringing this competition to local waters and offer the best of luck to all those taking part.”
The Erne system around the town has established itself as one of the top Predator fishing venues in Ireland with the annual Waterways Ireland World Pike Classic attracting over 350 entries. The biggest fish taken in the event in recent years was a Pike caught in 2011 weighing in at 26lbs 2ozs, with the average size of fish caught being around 8lbs.
Teams competing in the evebt consist of six anglers fishing as three pairs on boats, with all fish caught being weighed by a steward on the boat and returned to the water alive immediately after weighing.
Ireland fielded a team for the first time in the 2012 Championships in the Ukraine; they hope that the experience gained will assist them in winning a medal in 2013. The Erne Anglers Angling Club will again host a number of qualifiers on the River Erne in August 2013 to select the Ireland team for the event.
The event will run from 12 - 13 October 2013.
