Why not join the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Friends of Grey Point Fort on Saturday 3rd August 2013 for a really lively event. World Police and Fire Games visitors are especially welcome for a special day out.
The Fort is one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems - the best preserved coastal defence Battery in these islands. It also houses two fascinating collections of military memorabilia. Expert guides will be on hand to escort visitors.
Meet also "the troops" who defended Belfast Lough during two world wars, hear their stories, see the weaponry, including the Fort's two massive 6 inch diameter breech-loading guns, the extensive military radio and communications equipment and the military museum.
The Fort is open from 10am to 5pm every day of the week between 1 April and 15 September 2013.
Grey Point Fort is located at Helen's Bay within the very beautiful Crawfordsburn Country Park and a great place to spend the day. There is no admission charge to either the Fort or the park.
The Fort oversaw the huge fleet assembled in Belfast Lough before D-Day 1944, which was inspected by General Eisenhower. The fleet included three giant US Battleships; come and explore the Fort’s strong connections with the American Services during World War 2, including first-hand testimony.
A detailed brochure is available at the Fort. For more information on the Fort visit the website at www.greypointfort.magix.net/public (alternatively contact the Crawfordsburn Country Park Warden, Douglas.Mcowat@doeni.gov.uk).
The Fort is easily reached by a short walk from Helen’s Bay train station, which has regular services from all Belfast stations and from Bangor. Alternatively if coming by car, the Crawfordsburn Country Park is reached by turning off the main Belfast to Bangor Road up the Ballyrobert Road to Crawfordsburn, and is well signposted from then on.
