5000 years ago in Ireland, the great Elk wondered through the forest and mountains. It was a land of sweeping mists, gentle rain and soft sunlight. A land of pagan carvings and mysterious rituals it was the time of CuChulainn, Queen Maeve and the Red Branch Knights.

Today Island Turf Crafts have captured the very essence of that era. Turf from that golden age has been excavated to produce a range of giftware, including Celtic crosses, harps, picture frames and jewellery. Island Turf Crafts gifts are hand-crafted using 5000 year-old Irish peat from some of Europe's oldest bog lands.

Come and observe the craftsmen at work while exploring the bog museum with reconstructed lifestyles and habits of pre-historic Ireland with artefacts excavated from Irish boglands.  Artefacts on display reveal much about the rich and varied history of Ireland before and after the Ice Age. Exhibits include bog oak sculptures, numerous turf products, a simulated peat or turf bog and bones and large antlers from a Great Irish Elk dating back some 15,000 years.

Open: all year round: Monday - Friday 09.30 - 17.30, Saturday 1030 - 17.00 (Closed for lunch 13.00 - 13.45)

With guidance from our friendly staff create your own framed souvenir or little bit of Ireland to take home as a momento.  As well as the museum exhibits we have a short audio visual show telling the story of turf cutting in days gone by.
