Kernan Lough lies hidden amidst the rolling drumlins of the County Down countryside. The lough is approx. 28 hectares in size, and at its deepest point about 18 feet.
It is stocked each year with both Brown and Rainbow up to 5lb by Gilford Angling Club, and the heaviest fish caught each season is usually around 6Ib. Flys such as Hare's Ears are good throughout the season. Lures such as Viva, Mallard and Claret are good in the early and late season. Most wet and dry flys provide good fishing. For the disabled, fishing stands have been erected with easy ramp access from the car park (which has designated disabled parking). Most of the stands are not suitable for wading, as fall off areas are quite sharp and deep.
The right hand side of the lough (from the car park) is the shallowest and wading is possible at some of the stands. Fishermen are invited to use fly-fishing and spinning methods to reach the three fish per rod per day limit. There are no other restrictions but only registered members of Gilford Angling Club can use boats.
Season: 1st March - 31st October; Methods: Fly, Spinning (Worm, October); Boats: Maximum of 10. All boats on the lough must be registered, 6 inch numbers displayed on both sides of boats and life jackets must be worn; Bag Limit: 3 fish. Once the 3rd fish has been dispatched, rod to be dismantled.
