Background to EHOD

Properties across Northern Ireland will be opening their doors for free as part of European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September 2013.

Organised by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency this celebration is designed to encourage people of all ages to discover Northern Ireland’s rich and diverse architecture and heritage.

EHOD takes place every year in 49 countries across Europe! Last year over 61,000 people in Northern Ireland took part, visiting properties many of which are closed to the public for the rest of the year.

EHOD began in Northern Ireland in 1997 and all sorts of buildings have opened their doors from cottages to cathedrals, mills to former military bases and a few castles and town walls too.

EHOD brochures will be available from your local library or Tourist Information Centre from mid August and info on all the openers will also be available here too. In the meantime you can keep up to date via Facebook (https://en-gb.facebook.com/ehodni) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/ehodni). You can also contact us on (028) 9054 3022 or ehod@doeni.gov.uk.
