Belfast is voted runner up in the Favourite UK City Category. Over 13, 500 Guardian and Observer readers voted in this annual travel survey. Edinburgh is at number one for the eighth consecutive year, with Belfast now in the number two spot “proof that this lively, welcoming city is starting to get the recognition it deserves”. Friendly welcomeThis prestigious annual title captures what’s hot in the world of travel for the coming year. In 2007 it tipped Northern Ireland as a ‘must-see’ destination, and the new edition heralds Ireland as “the world’s friendliest country to visit”.

The Irish are praised for their deliciously dark sense of humour and welcoming attitude towards strangers and the guidebook promises that the ability of the irish people to always find craic in boom or bust times means the visitor is always in for a treat.

Georgina Campbell is one of Ireland's leading food and hospitality writers producing guides to Ireland's best places to eat, drink and stay. Georgina Campbell’s Ireland…the Guide launched for 2008, with announcement of the winners of the 9th Annual Awards for Excellence. Firmly established as Ireland's longest running independent hospitality Awards, these accolades are much respected within the industry.

Deane’s was praised for its smart, attentive and knowledgeable staff who provide unobtrusive professional service. Chefs Michael Deane and Derek Creagh are described as the yardstick against which all fine dining in Northern Ireland and further afield should be judged.

This is the second time this year Deanes Restaurant has been honoured by the cream of Ireland’s hospitality industry. In August, Deanes scooped the award for Best Ulster Restaurant and Restaurant of the Year Ireland at the Food and Wine Awards in Dublin.
