This brand new festival takes place at Laurel Villa Guest House in Magherafelt, a well-known poetry landmark, and promises to be an exciting and enjoyable weekend of events and activities.
Located in the heart of South Derry, it will be a joyous celebration of poets and poetry. It will pay tribute to those people and places of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s first world which have subsequently provided the inspiration for much of his work
The festival will feature readings by established and emerging poets from Ireland, Britain and abroad as well as talks and interviews by well-known writers, academics and broadcasters
A series of talks, performances, exhibitions and activities will highlight the influence of ‘place’ and the contribution that poetry can make to our lives.
Festival exhibitions include an Ulster townlands exhibition and an exhibition of paintings by one of the finest Irish artists of his generation.
Festival goers will be treated to music and song from talented local people performing ‘on home ground'.
During the weekend, the literary outputs of a pioneering poetry workshop project involving schools in the Magherafelt and Derry City areas will be showcased at the festival.
There will be a guided tour of Heaney Country for those wishing to find out more about the people and places that have influenced and inspired Seamus Heaney
As part of the celebrations marking City of Culture 2013, a festival outreach event will take place at Prehen House on the outskirts of Derry City on Saturday 14 September.
Seamus Heaney is Patron of the festival and will give the opening address.
