The Queen’s Quarter is named after the world renowned Queen’s University of Belfast which takes centre stage in an area endowed with architecture, art and attractions. The iconic Lanyon Building is named after its architect Charles Lanyon, one of the greatest figures in the development of Belfast’s architectural heritage.
Lanyon also designed the Palm House in the nearby Botanic Gardens, one of the oldest surviving examples of curvilinear iron and glass structures. The Gardens are also home to The Tropical Ravine built in 1889 and filled with a variety of tropical plants. Botanic Gardens is one of Belfast’s most popular parks and host to a range of events throughout the year including ‘Garden Gourmet’ and ‘Opera in the Park’.
The Queen’s Visitor’s Centre will provide information on the University and its surrounding areas. Take a stroll through the University’s Quadrangle to admire the architecture and soak up the dynamic atmosphere of the area.
Art is prominent in the University Quarter with the Naughton Gallery at Queen’s featuring work from the University’s own collection, as well as works by established artists. The Crescent Arts Centre hosts adventurous art programmes and is home to the Fenderesky Gallery which sells a wide collection of contemporary Irish and International art. The Square Space gallery is dedicated to exhibiting a range of contemporary visual art exhibitions. Lawrence Street Workshop offers something a bit more unusual.
With its diverse and youthful population Queen’s Quarter really comes to life at night, offering a range of pubs, clubs and hotels to suit all tastes. The Lyric Theatre has been a source of original powerful drama for over forty years. Although the building is now closed and about to begin a rebuild, the theatre continues to perform off-site productions across Belfast and Ireland. The Queen's Film Theatre (QFT) is an arthouse cinema which brings contemporary European and world films to audiences seven nights (with some afternoon and special showings) each week.
