Safety Considerations

If you are carrying out an activity independently, always ensure that you have the correct equipment with you, including clothing, footwear, safety equipment, first aid kit, mobile phone and refreshments. Ensure that you have the right map with you when going out onto the hills, and make sure you know how to read it! Bring a compass too.

Ensure that all safety equipment is in good condition and regularly serviced.

Check the weather forecast before you go.

You can get an up-to-date forecast by viewing www.metoffice.com or www.bbc.co.uk/weather Or check local TV and radio stations.

Before starting a new activity, it may be worth having a chat with your doctor.

If you're setting out alone, tell someone where you are going, what you are doing and when you expect to return.

Check that an activity provider is suitable for your needs, chat to them first and don't be afraid to ask questions about qualifications and experience. It might also help to ask them for a list of previous clients and chat to them as well.

All clubs listed here are members of governing bodies - for all other clubs, check with the relevant governing body to ensure they are regulated.

When booking an activity for children, make sure you see a copy of their child protection policy.

Make use of all equipment which is provided. It is there to keep you safe. Listen to what your instructor tells you to do.

Countryside recreation activities are great fun but can be dangerous so act sensibly. Don't leave your common sense at home.
