Salmon & Whiskey Festival

17 June - 18 June
The Bushmills Salmon & Whiskey Festival was started to celebrate the local culture, heritage and produce. It is a two day event showcasing music, food, the arts and delivering a unique experience for everyone. The concept of the festival was developed by Bushmills Traders Association but has been adopted by the local Council, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. The name came from the world renowned Bushmills Distillery and the salmon which inhabit the River Bush. Bushmills was originally known as Portcaman. In the 1600’s it became a small industrial settlement and important centre for corn and flax, milling, spade, paper and whiskey production. The river one powered seven mills along it’s stretch through the village. The flax mill later generated renewable electricity which powered the Giant’s Causeway tram. Bushmills is the ‘Gateway to the Giant’s Causeway’. The first licence to distil whiskey was granted to the Bushmills Distillery in 1608 and it is now a well-known tourist attraction.

The festival incorporates whiskey tasting and visitors can learn about how it is made. The festival features cookery demonstrations by a celebrity chef and also local chefs with locally sourced produce. Restaurants and eateries in the town have offers promoting locally sourced salmon and/or Bushmills Whiskey as key ingredients. As well as celebrating local salmon and whiskey the festival showcases other local produce including chocolates, cheeses, ice cream, preserves, jams, crafts etc. at the Causeway Coast and Glens Artisan Market on Saturday 17th. This is supported with various artists performing music or dance routines on a stage in the town centre. There are workshops for children with various other activities for them.
