Scrabo Country Park

The Park provides a natural retreat and offers to energetic visitors attractive walks through the beech and hazel woodlands of Killynether, carpeted in Spring with bluebells and wood anemones, through meadows and around the old quarries where the famed peach-coloured Scrabo sandstone was sourced. The quarries are of special interest to geologists as they display 'dykes' through which molten lava from deep in the earth burst up through the sandstone and horizontal 'sills', where it leaked out to the sides where there were weaknesses in the sandstone strata, cooling to form dolerite. The hard igneous dolerite which caps the hilltop protected it from the ice-sheet which ground away the rest of the sandstone. Ravens and jackdaws nest in the quarries, which have also been the breeding site for kestrels and peregrine falcons.

When it is open, visitors can also climb Scrabo Tower, built in 1857 in memory of the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry and one of Northern Ireland’s best known landmarks, and will be rewarded with spectacular views of Strangford Lough and North Down. (The Tower is now in the care of the Department for Communities).

Scrabo Country Park is located on the outskirts of Newtownards, around 11 miles east of Belfast City centre and is sign posted from the main A20 Belfast to Newtownards road. (Insert google map link),-5.7154226,17z
