About

Winner of Best Travel & Tourism APP category at the APPY awards in Dublin, 19th November 2015.

Sion Stables is one of the most recent visitor attractions to open in Northern Ireland, located on the A5 between Derry~Londonderry and Omagh in the intriguing village of Sion Mills, County Tyrone.

The authentically restored Sion Stables building is a perfect place to call in, take a stroll around the museum and learn about Herdmans Mill, the family, the workers and day to day village life that has endured for over 170 years.

Alternatively you may decide to join one of our group walking tours around the village with an accredited, World Host guide exploring the village, Mill and famous River Mourne. Guided walking tours need to be pre-booked and are for groups with a minimum of 10 people.

The heritage trail is also available in the Apple app store (iOs platform only) which will allow you to follow the tour in your own time – just look for the QR code.

We have devised our walking tour into three levels to try and suit individuals' ability and time frame. The walking tour starts and ends at Sion Stables. The main walking tour takes place along the main street which is flat and paved with rest points if required, here people will see Sion House and the Gate Lodge which was James Herdman's personal residence. They will be able to see the Mill workers' cottages and the hierarchy that existed in the housing structure based upon the workers' position in the Mill. They will be guided around the Integrated primary school (built 1839), the Presbyterian church (built 1866), the recreation club, St. Saviour's Church (deconsecrated but where originalyl all denomination church services were held) and The Church of the Good Shepherd.

An extension takes the tour down the Mill Lane which is a gentle gradient and is paved, and along a footpath to the swinging bridge, River Mourne, the Weir, the Lade and sluice Gates that still feed water to the turbines which are still in operation today.

On the way back the tour then stops at the original five-storey Herdmans Mill and you can see the architecture of the original building and the Lumm chimney. Our final stop is at the cricket ground where Ireland famously beat the West Indies in 1969.

The app trail experience is enhanced with AR coded interactive panels at key points on the tour – just hold your phone up to the panel when instructed to do so and watch a wonderful experience unfold in front of you.

Of course no visit would be complete without trying some of our Sion Stables Restaurant and Tea Room’s locally prepared treats, with something new on the menu every day or sample the restaurant's specialities – we look forward to welcoming you to Sion Stables in the near future.
