Situated along the ancient pilgrimage trail to Lough Derg - one of Ireland's most important ecclesiastical centres - lies a holy well, known locally as Tober Patrick. Local legend has it that St Patrick stopped here to quench his thirst on his return from a period of Lenten sacrifice on the nearby island of Lough Derg, and that the water from the well can help ease the pain of toothache.
Close to St Patrick's Well is another example of the Derg Valley's early Christian Heritage .The Magherakeel (plain of the Church ) monastic site dates from around the 6th Century and is reputed in later centuries to be associated with the Franciscans.
