Hosted in the historic settlements of Portaferry and Strangford the Strangford Lough Maritime Festival is set in one of the most beautiful and unique coastal locations in the British Isles – attracting not only thousands of tourists each year, but big budget film-makers like HBO who’ve turned Strangford & Lecale’s scenery and heritage into blockbuster locations.
This year’s festival acknowledges the area’s growing attraction to the international film industry with new specially adapted Game of Thrones Coach Tours running from Strangford on both days of the Festival, 31st May and 1st June 2014.
The Festival also continues to profile the history and heritage of the Vikings to the area, with an exciting new Viking Event featuring a Viking funeral procession through the town of Portaferry, followed by a ceremonial burning of a Viking long ship.
Alongside these new events will be the established stock of tried and tested activities such as exhibitions, talks, seaside safaris, seal watches, arts and craft, living history, music – all of which have made the festival such a big hit in former years, for families especially, attracted by the many FREE events, for children and adults.
The weekend will feature the Viking Village and medieval market, and Viking battles that children enjoy taking part in.
There will also be many water-based events, such as the relaxing boat trips that take in Strangford Lough’s spectacular natural and built heritage and for those wishing to find out more about Strangford’s Lough’s rich marine life, Queens University Marine Laboratory in Portaferry will once again be throwing open its doors.
