The Forge

Situated on the Hillhead Road just outside Castledawson, the Forge is in its original state (late 18th century, early 19th century). One half of the building comprises the dwelling area the other half is where the blacksmith plied his trade. The Blacksmith's cottage has been in the Devlin family for generations and all Blacksmith's tools, bellows etc are in place, together with various farming implements, which would have been left for repair. The highlight of the living section of the Forge is two life size replicas of the smith, Frank Devlin and his daughter Annie. The forge is also the subject of a poem written by Seamus Heaney.
