As well as a unique celebration of local trails, National Trails Day is all about getting outdoors and taking part in activities which you have never tried before.
Maybe you have always fancied canoeing but never known how to get started or perhaps you like the sound of getting back on the saddle and having a go with like minded beginners on a ‘learn to mountain bike’ session… well now’s your chance! Here are some ideas to whete your appetite.
Paddle the Blackwater – The Argory
Come along with family, friends or just bring yourself and have a go at canoeing on the River Blackwater. This leisurely and picturesque paddle is open to all abilities and will follow a tranquil section of the Blackwater Canoe Trail. The adventure begins in the morning at the scenic Argory, where participants will be introduced to their equipment and receive a full safety briefing as well as instructions from the expert guides on how to paddle the craft. It will then be time to hit the water and try out your paddling skills as the group makes its way along the Blackwater Canoe Trail towards Maghery. The entire trip should take approximately 3 hours and is the perfect introduction into canoeing. No previous experience is necessary and all specialist equipment is provided.
Try Canoeing – Shaw’s Bridge, Belfast
Take to the water with friends or family and have a laugh as you make a splash on the River Lagan. This free guided event will give you an opportunity to try your hand at canoeing with fully qualified, experienced and friendly instructors on hand to show you how to handle a canoe and most importantly make sure you have plenty of fun in the water! All necessary equipment including boats, buoyancy aids, paddles and helmets will be provided. All you need to do is turn up in comfortable warm clothing with an old pair of trainers and a light waterproof jacket, with a change of clothes and footwear in case you get wet. This is a perfect family-friendly activity day out with loads of fun guaranteed.
Rock, Roll n’ Ride – Tollymore National Outdoor Centre
Have a blast on the purpose built mountain biking skills course at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre with an experienced instructor. These 90 min mountain biking sessions will be running throughout the day and are suitable for anyone aged 10 and over. Participants will learn how to ride rollers, berms, drop offs, table tops, rock sections, northshore and log rolls. The variety and size of the features ensures that there are plenty of opportunities for all bikers of all levels to develop their riding skills while having a laugh in a fun and relaxed environment.
Guided Mountain Biking – Craigavon Lakes
Enjoy a guided mountain biking session on purpose built mountain bike trails around the Craigavon Lakes. Learn how to manoeuvre your way on off-road terrain under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor on this 10km trail as it meanders through broadleaf woodlands, wildflower meadows and along the lake shoreline. Learn how to tackle obstacles such as roots, rocks and sharp turns as you experience first hand how the trail utilises the landscape contours and the natural habitat around the park to create a challenging and also scenic riding experience. So whether you’ve always wanted to have a go at mountain biking or are looking for your next place to ride this is the perfect event for you.
