Waterfront recognised as a world leading conference centre
Belfast Waterfront has been named one of three runners up in this year’s prestigious International Association of Congress Centres (AIPC) Apex Award for the World’s Best Convention Centre.
The winning convention centre and runners-up were announced at the recent 2012 AIPC Annual Conference in Amsterdam. The AIPC is the association leader for professional conference and exhibition centre managers worldwide.
The AIPC Apex Award was won by London’s Royal College of Physicians. Belfast Waterfront was awarded a highly prestigious runners-up place along with the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando and the Convention Centre in Dublin.
The AIPC Apex Award competition recognises excellence in congress centre management and operation. The Award and runners-up places are based entirely on customer ratings of each participating conference venue’s performance. Performance indicators evaluated include: centre facilities, project management, customer relations, catering, creativity and technology.
Belfast Waterfront competed with 18 Apex Award finalists each of whom was independently assessed by international research firm, Ipsos.
AIPC President Edgar Hirt said: “Our runners-up are also deserving of real recognition, given the very high standards required to compete in this programme and the fact that they each achieved this distinction by being top-ranked in a specific category of evaluation. Overall, we feel the AIPC Apex Award goes far beyond simply the winners as it creates important information and insights that drive overall centre performance.”
This international accolade, which represents a major coup for the Waterfront and for Belfast, follows the announcement of an ambitious new capital investment programme for the Waterfront due to commence next year to install a newly upgraded state-of-the-art fully integrated conference facility at the venue.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson commented: “This is an incredible achievement given the quality of the competition in this intensely competitive global marketplace. It is further confirmation that Belfast Waterfront is not only a world class international centre of excellence for the 21st Century, but that it is officially one of the world’s elite conference centres.”
Since its opening in 1997, the Waterfront has contracted and hosted over 2,500 conferences, exhibitions and meetings, attracting thousands of visitors, delegates and their partners to Belfast.
