What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is tourism that takes account of environmental and social issues as well as economic factors. It respects the culture and environment of the host destination while still delivering a positive experience for the visitor and long term profitability for the industry.

Put another way, sustainable tourism is tourism that takes a long term view.  The UN World Tourism Organization describes sustainable tourism as “tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future".

NITB Policy

The very essence of Northern Ireland is its unspoilt countryside, its coastline and its people. NITB must advocate that this is not compromised.  This will require tourism to be developed responsibly with due regard to our social, economic and environmental sustainability.
