Fools Haven Thatched Cottage

WorldHost
This gem of a thatched cottage is over 250 years old and is situated at the start of the Causeway Coast and Glens Route, opposite the Andrew Jackson Cottage on the shores of Belfast Lough. One and a half miles from historic Carrickfergus Castle, town, restaurants and leisure facilities. Five minutes' walk (or less) to train, bus, post office and local shops.

We were recognised at the NI Tourism Awards, May 2011. The Judges 'COMMENDED' Fools Haven Thatched Cottage for our attention to detail, providing unique and personal welcomes with locally sourced produce, and for paying special attention to guest's individual needs.

Ferry Ports and airports within an hours' travel by car or taxi. Linen, towels, oil heating and electric all included in price. Complimentary welcome tray on arrival - includes a selection of home prepared produce. Private patio and picnic area for use by guests.

Fools Haven is where two local children, orphaned by the Titanic tragedy, were brought up. They had been sent to live with their Aunt while their Father sailed onboard the Titanic as an Engineer on that fateful maiden voyage to New York in April 1912. One of the children, Ruddick Millar, was honoured with the unveiling of a Historic Blue Plaque at Fools Haven Thatched Cottage in February 2012. Ruddick was a Titanic Orphan, Journalist, Author and Playwright 1907-1952. The author of Stirabout, When Johnny Comes Marching Home and The Land Girl was raised at Fool’s Haven in the village of Boneybefore following his father’s death. By the age of 18, one of Ruddick Millar’s plays was being performed at the Grand Opera House in Belfast.

New for 2012 is a BBQ Cabin for guests to use - we call it Bettys Bothy – so rain, hail or snow you can have your BBQ as planned. For those warm, sunny days enjoy sitting in your own private patio area. For the children we have Puffins Perch - a fun wooden Playhouse with toys – check out the photos.
