Wetting the Whistle

When it comes to our alcohol producing tradition, gentle warming blends and delectable aged malt whiskeys from Bushmills, County Antrim are part of Northern Ireland’s proud living heritage.  Licensed since 1608, The Old Bushmills Distillery uniquely distils, matures and bottles on site with four centuries of accumulated expertise.  We’re also spoilt for real ales and beers from microbreweries at Hilden, Lisburn and the Whitewater Brewing Company in Kilkeel.  The Armagh Cider Company now produces the first traditional cider to be made with local apples in years.

Pubs & Bars

If you fancy a quick bite, or even a liquid lunch, there are many great pubs in Northern Ireland. In Belfast you must try oysters and a pint of stout at the Crown Liquor Salon, a gorgeous Victorian pub preserved by the National Trust. The John Hewitt and the Kitchen Bar offer more tradition with session music, Irish stews and Paddy’s pizza - a substantial snack of cheese-topped soda farls or you can head for cosmopolitan menus, cocktails and music in one of the many swish, modern bars around town.
Further afield enjoy a slow pint at the Thatch Inn, Broughshane.  The Harbour Inn in Portrush offers a similar atmosphere with its 19th Century interior, or you can indulge in a bit of urban glamour and stylish fast food at its sister bars nearby. In Enniskillen, don’t miss the charm, character and history of Blakes of the Hollow.  In Derry, Badger's and Peadar O’Donnell's offer great craic with spontaneous and often raucous traditional music.  In Co Down visit Grace Neill's, the oldest pub in Ireland and The Plough in Hillsborough is a pleasant family-run pub.  Counties Armagh and Antrim also offer a plethora of great country pubs.
