Belfast unearths historic walking tours

29 May 2009 -

A series of free walking tours are to be organised by Belfast City Council in the capital next month.

The tours will be led by Ruairi O'Baoill, from the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork at Queen's University, and James O'Neill, a specialist in conflict archaeology.

Starting from the front gates of Belfast City Hall, the events will include an insight into the history behind the capital.

The tours will include archaeological sites that have been uncovered as part of the ongoing Streets Ahead initiative and sewer replacement programmes in the city centre and will also examine the stories of capital's historic buildings and landmarks.

Each Wednesday during June the excursions will begin at 18:30 BST and last approximately an hour.

On May 30th those looking for walking events in Northern Ireland will also be able to take part in a walk through the serene surroundings of Shane's Castle Estate organised by Antrim Borough Council.
