Hunger in the running for IFTA awards

11 February 2009 -

Steve McQueen's Hunger movie could receive more accolades this weekend when the Irish Film and Television Awards take place, highlighting and rewarding films in Northern Ireland and beyond.

Hunger, which has already won its director a British Academy of Film and Television Award, has been nominated in the Best Film and Best Script categories.

Actor Michael Fassbender, who played Bobby Sands in the production, is in the running for the Actor in a Lead Role accolade, while Liam Cunningham is in contention for the Actor in a Supporting Role prize.

The stars of Hunger are not the only actors from Northern Ireland who could walk away with an award, as 23-year-old Belfast-born actress Jenn Murray has been nominated for the Actress in a Lead Role category for her role in the film Dorothy.

In other news, Ms Murray has been chosen as the main character for the BBC's forthcoming programme The Day of the Triffids, which is an adaptation of the 1951 novel by John Wyndham.
