Mo Mowlam film in the pipeline

27 May 2009 -

A newly-commissioned film will tell the life story of former Northern Ireland secretary Mo Mowlam.

Oscar-nominated actress Julie Walters will play the lead role in a Channel 4 drama that will tell the tale of the poltician's rise within New Labour, her part in the negotiations that led to peace in Northern Ireland and her battle with cancer.

Channel 4's head of drama Liza Marshall commented: "Mo Mowlam is one of the most inspiring figures of our recent political past and I can't think of an actress who could more powerfully capture her energy, wit and ultimately the tragedy of her situation than Julie Walters."

The film, which will be shown in 2010, is directed by Emmy award-winner Philip Martin, who is responsible for Prime Suspect: The Final Act, Einstein and Eddington.

Fans of films in Northern Ireland will also be able to see a season of movies curated by soundtrack artist David Holmes at the Queen's Film Theatre from May 29th to June 4th.
