New EastSide Belfast City Bike Tour launched

20 August 2015

A brand new cycle tour exploring East Belfast has been launched in recent weeks.

As part of the unique EastSide Belfast City Bike Tour, participants can explore the rich history and heritage of East Belfast and its inspiring people. The tour, which departs from the City centre, takes in the area's highlights, including the SS Nomadic at Titanic Quarter, the mighty Harland and Wolff Cranes Samson and Goliath, and places that inspired the genius of Van Morrison’s music, C.S. Lewis and George Best.

Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister, Jonathan Bell, said: “This is a truly enriching way for both tourists and locals to explore places that have inspired many of the great people of Belfast including Van Morrison, George Best and C.S. Lewis. Guided tours like this allow people to come to parts of the city that may not be accessible by car and they would never usually visit.”

Norman Trotter from Belfast City Bike Tours (BCBT), who run the new tour, said: “We have been running Belfast City Bike Tours in other parts of the city for several years. We approached the East Belfast Partnership about bringing the Bike Tour into the EastSide. Using trails already developed by the Connswater Community Greenway project we put together a truly breathtaking and unique tour which promises to delight anyone wishing to learn more about what East Belfast has to offer. There is so much to see and do in east Belfast and what better way to visit it than by bike!

The tour also gives cyclists a glimpse of the wonderful rivers and nature of east Belfast via the Connswater Community Greenway, a popular cycle and walkway which will eventually run from the edge of Titanic Quarter at Victoria Park, through East Belfast and into the hills of Cregagh Glen. As part of this project, a new C.S. Lewis Civic Square is currently under construction which will be complete by Summer 2016.

Maurice Kinkead from the East Belfast Partnership said: “It’s a very exciting time for the east of the city with major developments such as the Connswater Community Greenway and a new visitor centre at Holywood Arches."

"We are looking forward to welcoming visitors EastSide and the new bike tour is a great way to discover what EastSide has to offer.”

The EastSide Belfast City Bike Tour costs just £20 and lasts approximately 3 hours and includes refreshments. The tour takes on Saturdays departing from Norm’s Bike Shop, 15 Smithfield Market at 10.30am.
