Surf kayakers to descend on Portrush

22 October 2008 -

Surf kayakers will make their way to Portrush this weekend for the British Open Championships the Coleraine Times reports.

Those interested in extreme activities in Northern Ireland will not want to miss the event which usually takes place in Cornwall but this year will happen in the waters on the East Strand.

Jonny Bingham, a local enthusiast and the event's organiser, told the news provider British surf kayakers were happy to stage the event in Portrush.

"Yeah they were impressed with the quality of surf we get here on the North Coast … the event will be based at the Watersports Centre on the East Strand with Whiterocks beach and Portballintrae acting as backup locations," he said.

Some of the biggest names in the sport will be in attendance including the current ladies world champion Tracy Sherrington, junior world champion Christopher Hobson and Santa Cruz champion Chris Harvey.

Those interested in extreme activities in Northern Ireland should keep the weekend free and make their way to Portrush.

If watersports are not your thing then Portrush still has something to offer, with panoramic views over the Causeway Coast.
