Ulster orchestras to play Waterfront concert

16 April 2009 -

This weekend will see the Ulster Orchestra and the Ulster Youth Orchestra combine to stage a concert of 'big' sounds.

Holidaymakers looking for music in Northern Ireland will be able to see the combined orchestras of 120 musicians play works designed for such large forces on April 18th at the Belfast Waterfront.

Richard Strauss' suite from Der Rosenkavalier - his most popular opera and a homage to Mozart - will be performed with Gustav Mahler's First Symphony.

David Byers, chief executive of the Ulster Orchestra, said that the group's work with the youth orchestra has produced many remarkable performances and nurtured generations of young, talented players.

"Our young musicians are just thrilled at the prospect of having the opportunity to play alongside the professionals," added Stanley Foreman, general manager of the Ulster Youth Orchestra.

In January this year the Ulster Orchestra received two Arts & Business Arts awards for its work with young people and business employees.
