This is the place where St Patrick is said to have founded a religious establishment in the 5th century. Standing impressively at the end of the village is the six metres tall cross, dating from the 9th century. It is one of Ulster’s finest Early Christian monuments.

A stone pillar stands in the churchyard to the great Hugh O’Neill, erected by one of his descendants, a professor of Aberdeen University. The Bardic Theatre Group put on performances and host other events at their theatre space on the edge of the village.
