The Con Tempo String Quartet is four Romanian musicians who formed a quartet in 1995 when they were students at the Music University in Bucharest. In 1999 they took up a Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in 2002 became the first Ensemble-in-Residence in the city of Galway. Though being a residence ensemble they have toured the world, playing in numerous concert halls including the Wigmore Hall, the Carnegie Hall, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Theatre Chatelet, Tel Aviv Opera House and many others.
Recognised as one of the world’s top string quartets, the Con Tempo has won a record fourteen international prizes and performed in more than 1,000 concerts in London, Paris, Tokyo, Rome and all over the world.
The quartet’s leader, Bogdan Sofei, after studies in Canada and with the Amadeus Quartet, went on as a soloist to win prizes in London, Hamburg and Bucharest and perform in Romania and Italy and by invitation for Prince Charles and Pope John 11.
Ingrid Nicola, the second violinist, has had a similar career of studies, international prizes and concerts.
The viola player, Andreea Banciu, has had a similarly high level of studies and prizes with a busy schedule of master classes and over eighty concerts per year.
Our ‘cellist, Adrian Mantu, after an equally impressive record of prizes, has performed a wide range of ‘cello concertos in Germany, Italy, Romania and elsewhere.
