This trail takes in the Oxford Island National Nature Reserve and is a haven for wildlife. Visitors can explore a range of habitats from woodlands to reedbeds. The trail also takes in Kinnego Marina, from here visitors can enjoy a boat trip around the secluded bays and islands.

Route

This ramble may be done in 2 parts -

Part 1

A short route of about 1 - 1.5 miles (allow 3/4 hr for scooter, twice that for pushed wheelchair). Cross the bridge at Reception and head across the main car park to a gravel path alongside the playground. Turn left at the information board. Ignore 2nd path signposted Croghan Hide, straight on for some distance. Just before a major access road turn left to a gravel path running alongside, thus avoiding park traffic. This leads to the car park in front of the play ground. Return to Reception or carry on to Part 2.

Part 2

About 2 -3 miles to Kinnego marina and Pond (allow at least 1 1/2 hrs scooter, or 2 1/2 hrs for pushed wheelchair. From reception cross the bridge and turn left. At midpoint of the curve take the narrow gravel path on left. Straight on, at junction take left fork. 100m on is Kinnego Hide, accessible by gentle ramp, or carry on and you emerge at the Wardens Office.

Skirt in front of this and take the gravel path signposted Waterside Hide etc. carry on to information board. Ahead is a large car park, enter it by a fairly steep downward slope. Pass in front of the buildings and turn left along an old tarmac path. This path turns sharply right along the back of Riverside House. Cross the wooden 4 feet wide bridge. Straight on, a short winding path leads down to another bridge to the Marina.

You can detour here viewing the boats or carry on to the toilet block (includes disabled toilet). Pass in from of this and turn left along the main thorough fare, past a playground to a sign 'Kinnego Pond' on your right. The pond is ahead, its waters edge being crossed by several wooden bridges (Care here over these 4 feet wide bridges).

Carry on to a junction signposted 'Kinnego Road' to the left. Follow this path over another bridge. Carry on, the path veering right past a bench to a short left turn over a 3ft 8" wide bridge over a ditch. the path winds now. At a crossroads carry straight on. The path leads you back to the thoroughfare leading to the playground.

NOTE the next part of the ramble is unsuitable for wheelchairs and you should retrace the route you came to reception. It is grade 4/5 for scooters - difficult/ very difficult. if you choose to continue, turn left down this broad road past a sign to 'Waterside House' and carry on to a T junction with entrance road.

Turn left for 100 m until you come to a rough, broad, gravel entrance (not signposted) which leads to a sign 'Private'. Turn right at this sign on to a narrow earthen/ gravel path. This is the more exciting part of the ramble, through dense wood and undergrowth with the path sometimes quite difficult to see.

After about 600m you emerge on to the Annaloiste Rd. Turn right just before the disused pay hut. Turn right down the road leading to Waterside car park until you come to a sign 'Dogs must be kept on leads etc'. Here is a fairly steep path you came down earlier. Return to reception by the same route you came.
