The Historic Walled City of Derry has been designated by the NI Tourist Board as one of five Signature Tourism Projects for Northern Ireland.

The purpose of signature project designation is to achieve international standout for the NI tourism product through creating a world-class visitor experience at key tourist destinations. The signature projects are recognised as being capital intensive and an initial £5m of public investment has been secured to kick-start the Walled City Signature Project.

Due to this designation, The Public Realm Plan was commissioned as a means of articulating a vision for the conservation, development and management of the Walled City that is worthy of its designation as a signature destination.

The aim is to enhance the quality of the Walled City as a place to visit, live, work as well as invest. Besides providing an overall framework for the regeneration of the Walled City, the Public Realm Plan provides specific recommendations for:

  • Visitor orientation and Gateway signage
  • Interpretation of the “Story of Derry”
  • Lighting Strategy for the Walls, Bridges and historic buildings
  • and key public spaces i.e. Waterloo Place, Pump Street and the Diamond.

Walled-City Phase One completionThe Walled City Public Realm Plan also contains concept plans for the four quarters of the Walled City and the Clarendon Street Conservation Area which make up the City’s Historic City Core.

This unique project will create and reinforce the uniqueness and excitement that the Walled City can offer to visitors and residents alike.

An Introduction to the Walled City

Family over looking the Walled City of DerryFew places in these islands can offer such a compelling and unique experience for the visitor as the Walled City of Derry – its setting on the steep hills overlooking the wide sweep of the River Foyle, its distinctive architecture and its famous walls all provide enormous appeal.

Add to this a potent history - evidence of which runs form the earliest times right up to the recent past – and all of this adds up to a story that is interesting, relevant and substantial.

This is why NITB, with our partners in government and the industry, have identified this unique place as one of the five signature projects in ‘Tourism in Northern Ireland – A Strategic Framework for Action 2004 – 2007’ and established an ambitious agenda to secure the city’s place on the international stage.

Key to success will be the delivery of a truly world class visitor experience.  However, despite the obvious qualities of the Walled City, we also recognise that its future success as a visitor destination will require substantial investment in both the built fabric and in the ‘story’ of Derry.

Inside the Tower Museum, DerryOur aim therefore is to provide visitors with every opportunity to understand, to absorb and to experience the story of Londonderry in all its complexity.

To truly succeed, this will mean a substantial and ongoing investment in the built and cultural heritage of the city, a full and frank engagement with the people of the city and a partnership approach across government and the tourism industry to secure the city’s status as a truly world class destination.
