New Visitor map launched for Lough Neagh & its Waterways
23 April 2013
A Visitor Map for the Lough Neagh and its Waterways Destination was officially launched at Ballyronan Marina on Tuesday 23rd April 2013. The Map will provide visitors to the destination with highlights of activities and attractions in the region.
The historic and present day importance of picturesque Lough Neagh to the surrounding region cannot be underestimated. In physical terms it is huge; Lough Neagh is the biggest body of freshwater in Britain and Ireland and one of the biggest lakes in western Europe, measuring over 300 square kms. Lough Neagh is situated in the centre of Northern Ireland with five of the region's six counties touching its shores.
The Lough Neagh & its Waterways Map is the first of its kind for the destination; it highlights key places of interest and activities around Lough Neagh, water access and facilities, day trip itineraries, the Lough Shore Cycle Trail, The Lough Neagh Canoe Trail and details the various boat trips departing around the shores.
Eimear Kearney, Marketing Officer for the Lough Neagh Partnership commented that “The Map will be extremely valuable on a number of levels; it will provide visitors to the region with a variety of activities and attractions, it will enable tourism and accommodation providers to make suggestions to their visitors and it will educate local people about what is on their doorstep."
The production of the Lough Neagh & its Waterways Map was funded by the NITB and co-ordinated by the Lough Neagh Partnership in conjunction with the seven councils around Lough Neagh.
Kathleen McBride, Northern Ireland Tourist Board Destination Manager, welcomed the map launch. She said, “This visitor map highlights the great opportunities visitors have to explore Lough Neagh and its adjoining waterways. As an emerging Northern Ireland destination, Lough Neagh offers visitors the chance to enjoy unique experiences and discover new places of interest.”
The map will is now available at Tourist Information Centres around Lough Neagh as well as the Belfast (& Northern Ireland) Welcome Centre.
