About

The canal opened in 1789 for the transportation of coal from Coalisland to Dublin making it a very important industrial heritage site.

The canal is a home to a variety of different plants and animals including Fauna, Flora, badgers, owls, yellow iris, banded damselfly, moorhen, dipper, kingfisher, grey wagtail, otters, pike and brown trout.

There is also a three section walk available which is 9 miles (return) long. It starts at the Cornmill in Coalisland town centre and runs along the canal to the point where it runs into the Blackwater river.
